Victoria (for Thalia)

I couldn't help but share this response from my mother, who gardens nearly full-time and always has something great to teach me...
"Your two examples of with and without a scape haircut is dead-on. I always cut mine down and it makes a difference. Last year was so warm (actually hot) that the garlic in general matured much earlier than usual and as a result I had a lot of difficulty with the wrapper outer layers splitting open – as you see in your group that stayed in the ground longer.  I think they will not last as long as those with intact wrappers. I agree, Music is a great variety! It’s so bloody productive and pretty ! Not to mention it’s easy to peel! I do manage to test a few other varieties though – can’t seem to put all my stinky eggs in one basket – same problem I have with the tomatoes! Brown Rose and Georgia Crystal are another couple that I’ve had good luck with and I’m tossing in two more new (for me) varieties this year just for  kicks. I got half the rows planted before we got hit with Sandy and since it’s supposed to be nice this weekend I’m shooting for tossing the rest in the ground Saturday. Last year we were lucky to have a great seaweed stash and I covered everybody with that – this year I’ll fall back on my old favorite mulch hay. I just wish garlic could survive in good shape a little longer. I usually reach a point in about Feb when all the hardnecks decide it’s time to re-think things and start to sprout! Then it’s back to supermarket soft-necks – just not the same thing!
